Our Editor's Take

Hank the Cowdog is a five-episode podcast with lots of Texas ranch-animal fun. The program is based on a popular children's story by John R. Erickson. Mystery ensues when Hank gets lost in The Dark, Uncharted Forest near his Texas Panhandle home.

Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey voices arrogant Hank for the podcast. Dialogue infused with sniffs, growls, and howls is superb. It's ideal for a hound that looks down his nose on friends Drover, Sally May, High Loper, and more. Leading the Hank the Cowdog gang through the forest and back home is Hank's job as "Head of Ranch Security." He handles it well as he sees it. But, unfortunately, his buddies aren't so sure.

One podcast episode follows Hank and his reluctant friend, Drover. Together, the two investigate a strange set of tracks on the ranch. Hank determines the tracks are Pete the Barncat's. But they're those of a much more sinister (feline) foe. Another episode leads listeners as a pair of begrudged coyotes track Hank on the run. In another storyline, Hank marshals the mettle to protect Alfred from a bobcat's fangs and claws. The Hank the Cowdog team even has to escape a Texas Panhandle flash flood!

A team of stellar voice talent backs McConaughey's. Actor Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad, Fargo) plays the younger ranch dog, Drover. Kirsten Dunst (Elizabethtown, The Power of Dog) is the voice of Rancher Sally May. Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water, Boardwalk Empire) plays Sinister the Bobcat. Joel Edgerton voices Rip and Snort, the antagonist coyote with a grudge against Hank.

Jeff Nichols is the writer and director of the Hank the Cowdog podcast. Many will recognize Nichols from Take Shelter and Mud. These films also star McConaughey. Listeners of all ages may enjoy the fun mysteries on this show.
